We have been notified that scammers posing as co-op employees are calling our members in an effort to collect money. Scammers often use threats and urgency to pressure people into giving them personal information. They tell members if they don’t pay their power will be cut off.

SMEC never makes phone calls to collect payment for power bills or any other purpose.  If you are called by anyone claiming they represent SMEC demanding money, your bank account number or telling you to put money on a prepaid credit or debit card - Don’t do it, it is a scam.

If you have doubts or questions about your electric bill, contact the co-op during normal business hours either in person or over the phone.

We encourage you to share this post in an effort to make more people aware of scammers in our co-op service area.
